The Hong Kong Prize

The Hong Kong prize is a non-governmental merit-based award that rewards outstanding scientists and research teams who have made significant contributions to the development of scientific and technological innovation in Hong Kong. It is a collaboration between the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited and the Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation.

The prize is open to all fields of Hong Kong’s scientific and technological innovation, including but not limited to Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Life and Health, New Materials and New Energy, Advanced Manufacturing, FinTech. It is also open to all scientific and technological achievements that have transformed the world and Hong Kong, as well as created social and economic value.

Each year, the review committees will select candidates based on their research achievements and contributions to the development of scientific and technological innovation. They shall make independent judgments and objective evaluations by assessing the candidate’s scientific and technological innovation achievements, the transformation of these achievements and their social and economic value.

This competition is open to scholars who have written an article in a peer-reviewed journal in the Social Sciences or Humanities discipline that take Hong Kong as its primary subject of inquiry. Publications must be written in English and published between 2021 and 2022.

Those who are eligible for this prize should submit their articles to the Society of Hong Kong Studies (SHKS) by September 30, 2020. The submissions should be in the form of articles or papers that are peer-reviewed and place Hong Kong in global, comparative and theoretical perspectives.

A shortlist of 25 works has been selected for this competition by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. The shortlist features established and emerging Hong Kong artists, community artists, as well as youth artists with a diverse range of media and subjects.

One of the shortlisted works, China’s Not Found, by first time feature director Huang Ningwei, is a story about two primary school friends who travel 20 years into the future to find each other. The film is produced by veteran producer Stephen Lam and Sandy Yip for Production Avenue.

Another shortlisted work, A Good Night to Fall, by David Kwok, is a drama that explores the challenges of migrant domestic workers in Hong Kong. The film won the Best Film and Best Script awards at the Hong Kong Independent Film Festival.

The winner of this competition will be announced on December 7, 2022. The prizes are HKD 2 million, a certificate and a trophy.
