Overland and our judges, Patrick Lenton, Alice Bishop and Sara Saleh, are pleased to announce the winners of the 2024 Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize. First place wins $5000 and two runners-up receive $750 each, and the winning story will be published in our autumn issue.

Last Home Standing tells the story of Jacqueline Tamaklo, one of the millions of people victimized by predatory mortgage scandals in this country. The piece won the September Sidney prize from the Hillman Foundation, which gives a monthly award to pieces of socially-conscious journalism that expose injustice. Winners of the Sidney prize get a nice bottle of union made wine and a certificate designed by New Yorker cartoonist Edward Sorel. More info about the prize is here.
